Ricco looked uncertain, taking a step with his good leg, and then swinging the mechanical leg forward. It was jerky, and he nearly stumbled. Leo watched with a critical eye. “A few more steps please, back and forth across the room.”

Ricco complied, and Bryn held her breath, hoping he wouldn’t fall. His gait was unsteady at first, and he wobbled like a sailor. He grimaced with every step and started to sweat. But by the time he made it back across the room, his gait had smoothed out, and he was no longer wobbling.

“Very good, but that looked hard. I think it’s a bit too short for you. We can easily fix that. Now, let me get some more measurements. Give us a week, and we will have this perfect,” Leo said, pulling out a measuring tape.

“That hurt like hell, but it was amazing. By the end there, it really felt natural,” Ricco said, as Leo unbuckled the leg and placed it back on the cart. Ricco rubbed his stump; it was now red and swollen.

“Yes, when we get it dialed in, it should feel like a normal leg. Well, minus sensation, of course. We haven’t tackled that problem yet,” Leo said, laughing.

They chatted a bit more and then took a tour of the lab. They found a team of engineers already hard at work on the mechanical leg. The service panels had been removed, revealing an array of gears inside. They chatted and slapped Ricco on the back, joking with him good-naturedly about being a one-legged man. He took it in stride, and when they left, he had a smile on his face.

The horseless carriage was still waiting for them. “How about lunch, dear?” Bryn said. “It’s been ages since we’ve been out.”

“Sure. Driver, you know any good places for us to eat out?” Ricco asked. “We’ve got a bit to celebrate.”
